On November 16, 2024, over 120 couples gathered at John Paul II Secondary School in London, Ontario, for the annual Marriage Conference hosted by Family Foundations Institute (FFI). Designed to help couples prioritize their relationships and build stronger families rooted in love and purpose, the event included Holy Mass, two talks, interactive reflections, a hot lunch, and opportunities for socializing.
In their first talk, “Growing Your Family Culture,” keynote speakers Mike and Alicia Hernon from the Messy Family Project challenged couples to evaluate what truly defines their homes. They explained how every family develops a culture, whether intentional or accidental. They emphasized that by cultivating meaningful traditions, fostering strong connections, and prioritizing time together, couples can create homes that communicate love, belonging, and mission. Their practical tools included strategies for setting clear family values and incorporating faith into daily routines, such as regular family prayer, shared meals, and intentional conversations.
In their second talk, “Making Your Marriage the Foundation of Your Family,” Mike and Alicia highlighted the vital role of the spousal relationship as the cornerstone of a thriving home. They shared insights such as:
- A strong marriage provides the stability children need to flourish.
- Investing in your marriage through quality time, honest communication, and shared faith deepens intimacy and builds resilience.
- Couples can guard their relationship by scheduling regular date nights, praying together, and resolving conflicts with love and humility.
The Hernons encouraged couples to see their love as a reflection of Christ’s love for the Church, reminding them that marriage is a powerful witness to the world.
The interactive Q&A session brought the day’s lessons to life, as couples asked questions about real-world challenges in marriage and parenting. From managing busy schedules to navigating disagreements, Mike and Alicia provided honest, practical advice grounded in their experience of raising ten children. Their humour and authenticity resonated with attendees, fostering a supportive and encouraging atmosphere.
The conference went beyond learning, it was about connection. Couples attended Mass, shared a meal, and engaged in discussions that built community and mutual support. Many left inspired by the Hernons’ insights and energized by meeting others on a similar journey.
The theme, “Marriage as Mission,” reminded participants that marriage is more than a partnership, it is a vocation and mission to reflect God’s love through the family.
By focusing on the foundational aspects of marriage and family culture, the conference equipped couples with actionable steps to strengthen their bonds, deepen their faith, and embrace the sacred calling of marriage.
With over 120 couples in attendance, the event highlighted the growing hunger for resources and community that empower Catholic marriages. The day was a beautiful testament to the transformative power of intentional, faith-filled relationships.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this event possible and look forward to continuing the mission of supporting marriages. Stay tuned for future events and resources!
